Carroll County Forest Fire Warden's Association
News:  Roland Harry Libby, 79, of Water Village, died March 2, 2010, at his home.He was born in Ossipee, Oct. 11, 1930, to Robert and Helen (Eldridge) Libby. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He worked for Cy Moody as a laborer for several years. After his retirement he worked for the New Hampshire Department of Forest and Lands. He took great pride and enjoyment serving as a watchman for the Green Mountain Fire Tower for several years. He served as fire warden in Ossipee Corner and as a deputy fire chief of the Ossipee Corner Fire Department. He was an active member of Tuftonboro United Methodist Church. Family members include his wife of 58 years, Frances "Dee Dee" (Estes) Libby of Water Village; two daughters, Cynthia Morrill of Hutchinson, Kan. and Debbie Bolobanic of Rochester; a son, Alan Libby of Effingham; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, John Libby of Ossipee; and two sisters, Annie Jacobsen of Ossipee and Thurley Litwhiler of Vestil, N.Y.SERVICES: Calling hours will be Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lord Funeral Home, Wolfeboro. Funeral services will be Sunday at 1 p.m. in Tuftonboro United Methodist Church. The Rev. Murray Nickerson Jr. and the Rev. Bill Hartford will officiate. Burial will be in Water Village Cemetery, Water Village, in the spring. Memorial donations may be made to Tuftonboro United Methodist Church or Ossipee Corner Fire Department.
For those planning to attend the calling hours Saturday night, the family requested a special uniformed personnel walk through at 7:30PM.  The Minister will give a prayer at the end of the calling hours at 8PM, and the family asked that uniformed personnel remain for the prayer if they can.

Roland's family requested that we provide a new Forests & Lands hat to be displayed in the casket along with the Ossipee Corner Fire Department's hat.  Both will remain in the casket at burial.

In case anyone missed the obituary Doug sent out, calling hours are only from 6-8PM Saturday. We will form an Honor Guard with the Ossipee Corner FD outside the church at the funeral on Sunday.  The church is small so we may have to remain outside during the service so dress accordingly.  Rangers should wear the Class A uniform, and Fire Tower personnel should wear their lookout uniform if possible.

Thank you to all who have helped with disseminating information.  Roland loved being the Green Mtn Fire Tower Watchman.  He worked for us full-time from 1995 through 2006 and continued to fill in when needed as a Special Deputy Warden from 2007 through the end of last season when he helped me close the tower.  He was not only a great tower watchman, he was also a terrific ambassador for the Forest Protection Bureau.  "Harry" had quite a following of fans who enjoyed visiting him at the tower and corresponding with him through letters left in his mailbox at the foot of the tower when he wasn't there.  He even placed a water bowl out for hikers' dogs on hot summer days.  No one was better at locating fires than Roland.  He knew every nook and cranny of his coverage area and always guided responding fire personnel directly to the fire scene.  In fact, he could usually tell you whose house the burn pile was behind.

New Hampshire Division of Fire Standards and Training and Emergency Medical Services Director Rick Mason regrets to announce the passing of Diane Carver on Thursday, April 1, 2010.  Diane was the Print Shop Manager at the Fire Academy for nearly 2 decades and was pre-deceased by her Husband Peter, who was an Assistant Chief with Fire Training in NH. Diane will be missed by many and the funeral arrangements can be viewed at: http://www.phaneuf.net/_mgxroot/page_10785.php?id=770960 and there will be a reception at the Fire Academy immediately following.

News from the Forest Ranger:
"it looks like fire tower operations will continue as they have the last few years due to continued budget constraints.  They will only be open on high fire danger days using existing Fire Tower Watchpersons and/or Special Deputy Wardens trained in tower operations.
The Warden/Deputy Warden trainings this year will be regionalized rather than per district, meaning that each region will hold one official training for all W/DW's in the region rather than holding the same training in several districts.  Districts 4, 12, 15, 16 (mine) & 18 are in the Central Region.  As of now, the Central Region W/DW training will tentatively be held on June 25, 2011 at the Hidden Valley Boy Scout Camp in Gilmanton.  The training will consist of rotating through several stations covering GPS/Map & Compass, Pumps, Wildland Urban Interface with foam applications and chainsaw safety.  The training date and topics are still tentative so there may be changes between now and then.  We will have a training on Map & Compass at the June CCFFWA meeting.  I'm hoping to have it at King Pine, but that's not confirmed yet.
